Why Delhi's pollution is wrecking your skin - and what to do about it

If you live in Delhi, you already know what it feels like to step outside during October and come back home with a layer of grime on your face. But beyond the visible dust, what's actually happening to your skin is a lot more troubling than most people realize.

Delhi's air carries a cocktail of PM2.5 particles, heavy metals, and toxic gases — and unlike larger dust particles that sit on the skin's surface, PM2.5 is fine enough to penetrate into your pores. Once inside, it triggers inflammation, accelerates melanin production (which is why Delhiites often notice their skin getting progressively darker despite no sun exposure), and breaks down collagen over time. In my clinic, I've been seeing a clear rise in patients with what I call "pollution-induced aging" — fine lines, uneven texture, and persistent dullness in people who are otherwise taking good care of their skin.

The thing most people get wrong is thinking that washing your face at night is enough. Honestly, it isn't. By the time you wash, those fine particles have already sat on your skin for hours, and if your skin barrier is even slightly compromised — which it often is in dry winter months — they've done their damage. What actually helps is a proper double-cleanse routine: an oil-based cleanser first to break down particulate matter and SPF residue, followed by a gentle face wash. It sounds like extra work, and it is. But your skin is dealing with conditions that people in other cities simply aren't.

Two things I recommend to all my Delhi patients specifically: a niacinamide serum (it strengthens the skin barrier and reduces pigmentation caused by oxidative stress) and a proper antioxidant — either topical Vitamin C in the morning or an oral supplement. Neither of these is a miracle fix, but together they're your skin's best defence against what the city is throwing at it daily. And of course, sunscreen — always, even in winter, even on cloudy days — because UV multiplies pollution damage significantly. Come see me if you've been noticing persistent dullness or new pigmentation you can't explain. It's often more treatable than people think.
